So this is late. I try to post these weekly round-ups on Sunday or Monday, depending on how my weekend goes, and it is now Wednesday night. So late on Wednesday night, in fact, that’s it’s actually Thursday morning on the East coast. What can I say? It’s summertime, which in Mom World is crazytime. The kids are home all day long. They are hungry all day long. They are bored all day long. Actually, kids in my house are never bored, or at least they never voice it, because if they do, they find themselves staring at toilet with a scrub brush in their hand. Nothing cures boredom quite like scrubbing a toilet!

And that’s the kind of mom I am. Interestingly, I just got off the phone with a single girlfriend, with whom I shared a story from the beach today. One of my kiddos was carelessly kicking sand on people, and needed to be corrected. “See?” She said, “This is why I can never have kids. I’d probably kick sand on them and ask, ‘How does that feel?’”

“Um … what do you think I did?”

And that’s the kind of mom I am. The kind of mom whose kids don’t carelessly kick sand on other people.

Anyway, I wrote some stuff last week! And you should totally click on it and maybe even read it. Otherwise you might find yourself staring a toilet with a scrub brush in your hand.

President Obama gave a little speech about the debt limit. It was riddled with blatant untruths. I narrowed down the top nine.

Speaking of President Obama, do you know that he signed a bill that authorized $50 million of your hard-earned money to put guns in the hands of dangerous Mexican drug lords? Because he totally did. Oh, and Attorney General Eric Holder lied about it.

I also mocked global warming scare tactics and possibly polar bears. Because polar bears would totally eat me, given the chance.

Happy reading!

I wrote some schtuff last week. It’s super important that you read it. Or at least click on the links, even if you never get around to reading it because a small person asked for an 87th sippy cup of juice, or your boss walked in and you’re supposed to, like, actually work and not mess around reading political commentary on the Internet. Because the people that hire me won’t know you didn’t read it, they’ll just see page views. Help a free-lancer out, people!

Apparently people are getting themselves killed by Mexican drug cartels using American firearms. The idea was to follow the guns to the big bad drug lords, but the operation has gotten completely out of hand. Skeery stuff.

In crazy San Francisco news, the city wants to make ex-cons a protected class of citizens. I’m reminded of that scene from Liar Liar when Jim Carey yells into the phone to one of his scummy clients wanting legal advice, “STOP BREAKING LAW, ASSHOLE!

Should obese children be removed from their homes and placed in foster care? I say no times a thousand. I love the first comment on this one: “Do you really have to make EVERY article about politics?” Um, yes. That’s what I do for a living.

I can even turn Glee into a political issue! I’m totally talented like that.

I was also on The Roger Hedgecock Show to talk about the debt ceiling. It was my first time on a nationally syndicated AM radio show, and I loved it. If you loved it too, tell your favorite radio host you’d like them to have me on. Seriously, if you demand, they’ll supply. I hope.

Have a great week!

In which I talk to Meredith Dake about Media Matters for America, and also ramble about summertime with kids, ATF, Obama, and Google+.

Happy listening!

The vitriol spewed by many ‘news’ sources after the mass shooting in Tucson, Arizona, last Saturday has been pointless, political, and extremely uncalled for. A congresswoman was shot through the headand will probably never fully recover. Six people died, including a federal judge and a nine-year-old girl.

The Left came out swinging against their favorite target Sarah Palin, claiming that she has blood on her hands and that she caused the massacre. Apparently guns don’t kill people, metaphors do.

It wasn’t just Palin that the left accosted, but the Tea Party movementin general. Because, you know, Tea Partiers are so violent. That’s why there are always so many arrests at tea party rallies. (That was sarcasm, by the way. Tea Partiers may be crazy about Glenn Beck, but they’re not violent.)

From Houston News:

The teenage son of a Harris County deputy constable shot a burglar this afternoon who tried to break into their home, authorities said.

The boy, 15, and his sister, 12, were alone about 2:45 p.m. when someone tried to kick open the front door then soon after the back door of their home in the 2600 block of Royal Place Court, officials said.

Their father was at work at the time, said officials with the Harris County Precinct 1 Constable’s Office.

When one of the suspected burglars kicked open a window, the boy grabbed a rifle and fired. Both burglars then fled, officials said.

Soon after the shooting, a man showed up at Tomball Methodist Hospital with a gunshot wound. He is being questioned by investigators. There was no information about the second suspect, who remains at large, officials said.

The children were not injured during the ordeal, officials said.

Investigators with the Harris County Sheriff’s Department have launched an investigation.

I love every part of this story. I love the fifteen year old knowing gun safety and how to use a firearm. I love him protecting him home, and more importantly, his little sister. I love the intruder getting shot. I love Texas. The whole thing is just plain awesome.

Last night I finally sat down with Leif to watch the season finale of Grey’s Anatomy that has been lingering on our DVR for a week or so. I had heard it was an excellent episode, so I was looking forward to actually seeing it.

I was not disappointed. The action started about ten minutes in and didn’t stop for two hours. My heart pumped so much I’m pretty sure I got an excellent workout. And I went through an entire box of Kleenex.

Spoiler Alert

The episode revolved around a man that lost his wife a few episodes back. She was essentially brain dead, and she had signed papers stating that she didn’t want to live like that and the plug should be pulled. The chief of surgery (Derek) ordered the plug to be pulled, and the wife’s body died. But not after an emotional scene by the husband, who wanted her kept alive on machines, even with no chance of recovery.

So this dude got pissed. And in the finale, he came into the hospital and started shooting people. And pretty much didn’t stop for two hours.

The very last scene, he’s sitting with the gun pointed at one of the prominent characters of the series (Richard). The gunman then started rambling, as crazy people in season finales like to do, and he mentioned how he obtained the gun.

“I just went into Walmart and bought one,” he said. “Did you know you could buy guns at Walmart? There’s a whole section. Aisle six.”

Ok, obviously this guy never would’ve been able to kill people if evil Walmart didn’t sell guns. We obviously need some sort of gun control! Guns kill people!

Except that they don’t. Guns don’t kill people-crazy and/or evil people do.  Do you know what stops those people from killing? Good guys with guns.

It would have been a much different show if one of those people in the hospital had pulled a gun out and shot the crazy guy that was killing almost everyone in his line of vision. Who knows, maybe he wouldn’t even have come to the hospital to shoot it up if he knew the people there were armed.

Government regulations don’t stop bad guys from shooting and killing people. Good guys with guns do.
