In a low that hardly seems possible in this age of civility, the online DC gossip site Wonkette has viciously attacked the disabled toddler of a former politician. Trig Palin celebrated his third birthday on April 18, and to mark the occasion, Team Sarah posted a birthday poem to the former Alaskan Governor’s youngest son.

In a completely unwarranted response to the gesture, the folks at Wonkette questioned Trig’s parentage, implied incest within the Palin family, called the little boy a retarded political prop, and recommended that he get drunk to deal with his family that’s even stupider than he is.

Also, he licks strangers just like his big sister Piper licked her fingers to smooth down his hair on camera once. That must mean all the Palin children are morons because … because why, exactly? What mother hasn’t smoothed down her kid’s hair with spit on occasion, and what big sister hasn’t mimicked mommy with her younger siblings?

Conservative author and columnist S.E. Cupp was on the Joy Behar Show earlier this week to talk politics with Jerry Springer and Joy. The conversation centered around President Obama’s tax-the-rich speech, and whether or not wealthier Americans should be more heavily taxed to support massive social programs.

Springer and Behar spoke in favor of higher taxes, while Cupp preferred to let everyone keep as much of their own money as possible. As a side note, I’m dying to know how much money the two liberal talk show hosts donate to the federal government each quarter.

Eventually the subject of Planned Parenthood came up, and Cupp said that she did not support federal funding of the biggest abortion millin America.

The morning after this segment aired, blatherskite Keith Olbermann tweeted about Ms. Cupp, “On so many levels she’s a perfect demonstration of the necessity of the work Planned Parenthood does.” The implication is obviously that he believes her mother should have aborted her.

A 12-year-old Staten Island boy has been charged with assault as ahate crime for taunting, beating up on, and attempting to rip the headscarf off of a female classmate. Osman Daramy and an unnamed accomplice demanded to know if the girl was Muslim, and when she told them to leave her alone, he punched and kicked her.

The attacks continued for months, until the girl had enough and reported the abuse to the assistant principal of her school, who then reported it to the police. The underage troublemaker is being held without bail for a third-degree assault as a hate crime. In addition to his abuse of this girl, Osman apparently enjoyed treating his peers like garbage — he’s already been suspended three times this year, and just this week cut a chunk of hair off another female classmate’s head.

Osman’s father, Frank Davies, claims his son is a victim, and that ‘they’ are out to get him because he himself is a Muslim and African-American. It couldn’t possibly have anything to do with the kid’s malicious and hateful treatment of his peers.

The adolescent hooligan is being held without bail, and due to his juvenile status, the case will be handled in Family Court.

When I was in college, I loved Abercrombie & Fitch. That super lame LFO song had come out a few years earlier, and A&F was where all the Summertime Girls and cool kids shopped. A lot of my dorm-mates even kept the notoriously sexy shopping bags tacked up inside their closets.

In 2002, I stopped shopping at Abercrombie. They had started selling thong panties as part of their tween line, complete with suggestive phrases like eye candy and wink wink. I just couldn’t in good conscience support a store that would call the underwear ‘light-hearted and cute.’

There is nothing light-hearted or cute about a ten-year-old in thong panties with the words eye candy stamped on her crotch.

The store eventually (and rightfully) caved to pressure from family-advocacy and Christian groups, and pulled the provocative panties from the shelves.

The clothing retailer is once again in the news for another product in their kids’ line. This time it’s padded bikini tops for girls as young as eight. As the mother of a little girl that will be eight and in third grade by the end of this upcoming summer, I’m disturbed on many levels.

Who looked at an eight-year-old girl and thought to him or herself, Hmmm … she’s a bit flat chested. Let’s help her out a little bit?

Who’s the designer that agreed to pad swimsuit tops for little girls?

Who are the parents that buy these and in effect encourage others to gawk at their prepubescent daughters??

What purpose does a padded bra or bikini top serve other than to make the wearer sexier than she would be otherwise?

As a capitalist, I agree that it’s Abercrombie’s right to sell completely inappropriate clothing. As a parent, it’s my right to be outraged over it.

new law in South Dakota would require women to wait three days after a physician assessment and attend a counseling session at a pregnancy care clinic before they can have an abortion. Like any law designed to enforce abortion providers to help women make educated decisions, this one is most likely in for a legal battle.

Why? Whether or not to have an abortion is one of the most monumental decisions a woman will ever make. Whatever the reasoning, circumstance, or political spin, the decision to have an abortion is the decision to end a life, and should not be taken lightly.

Planned Parenthood, one of the organizations protesting the new South Dakota law, is notorious for lying to women about the development of their fetuses. Seeing as how it’s the number one abortion provider in the country, it might be a good idea for women to get a second opinion from a pregnancy care center that will offer them more options than abortion.

I have long been a fan of John Rosemond’s parenting advice. As a matter of fact, his book on toddlers got me through some rough spots with both of my children with a shred of my sanity intact. His advice to parents from across the spectrum (biological, adoptive, step, etc.) is that “all children should be raised according to common principles, foremost of which is that parents should balance love and discipline in training children toward becoming productive, responsible members of society.”

In short, Dr. Rosemond provides a no-nonsense approach to parenting that puts parents and their children in their proper roles. Parents are to be parents (not friends) to their children, while lovingly disciplining them to become responsible adults.

I was perusing The Stir when I came across a headline reading: Advice Columnist Tells Mom Her Teen NEEDS Her Abuser. I was shocked! What kind of advice columnist would say such a thing? I was compelled to click and read more. I was absolutely floored when I read the article and found out that the ‘advice columnist’ was none other than my go-to parenting expert John Rosemond.

The article was written in response to this column, in which a mom of a 19-year-old woman asks for advice on how to handle her daughter’s boyfriend. The young man (also 19), according to the mother, is likable, not a partier, doesn’t smoke or drink, is serious about his education, and has a rational career plan mapped out. In addition, her daughter is “a responsible, level-headed girl.”

This morning I did what I do every morning. Hit the snooze bar too many times, finally look over at the clock, sit bolt upright and say, “Crap!” Then there’s a crazy flight-of-the-bumblebee dance as Leif gets ready for work and I get Thing 1 breakfasted, dressed, and ready for school.

Because I’m a news junkie, I can find at least thirty seconds in there to check the headlines on Twitter. Where I saw a lot of people upset with Tucker Carlson for a comment he made about Sarah Palin: “Palin’s popularity falling in Iowa, but maintains lead to become supreme commander of Milfistan.”

MILF has become common vernacular, and even though it’s technically an acronym for Mom I’d Like to Fornicate with (ok, the F is for something else … I’ll leave it at that), I take it to mean nothing more than hot mama. The term might be crass, but Sarah Palin is a very pretty lady, and I don’t have a problem acknowledging that.

I would be offended if Carlson had indicated that Palin’s slippage in the Iowa polls was because she was a pretty face and nothing more, but I just don’t see that. I see a dude that has put his foot in his mouth before (Remember when he said Michael Vick should be executed?) doing it again.

Carlson tried, in a funny and contemporary way, to say, “Palin might be falling in the polls, but at least she’s still pretty.” I’ve had more than one friend look at me after I’ve said something really dumb or been dealt a blow and said, “Aw, Honey, you’re so pretty.”

It’s meant to be silly. It’s not to be taken seriously. Carlson may have used a tasteless word that many take offense to, but he’s not a woman-bashing misogynist. He just has a chronic case of word-vomit.

In this fabulous era of equality, I’m hard-pressed to find something a man can do that I can’t. Maybe pee standing up, but that’s about it. I have the same opportunities as men in this glorious nation. Opportunities for an education, a career, the right to vote — things our grandmothers and great-grandmothers could only dream of.

It was a hard-won fight by our foremothers, but by golly, we have arrived. Growing up in the tail end of the twentieth-century, it never occurred to me to limit myself based on my gender. I never played dumb to attract a boy (in fact I tutored more than one boyfriend), never feared discrimination for having breasts, and never needed a man to intercede on my behalf.

In other words: I am woman, hear me roar!

Unfortunately, many of my homegirls have taken this whole equal-to-a-man concept and erroneously transformed it into a we-don’t-need-men-except-as-sperm-donors ideal. Want kids, but don’t want to put up with a pesky man and his stinky feet and his whiskers in the sink every morning? Just get yourself a spermsicle, and you too can be aglamorous single mom!

Who needs a perpetual man-child anyway? Aren’t we better off without them?

It’s no wonder that Republicans have such a bad rap with progressives. Apparently, we want to legalize rape. I wouldn’t like Republicans either if that were even one teensy weensy bit true.

The controversy stems from the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortions Act, which seeks to expand existing Hyde amendment restrictions on the use of taxpayer money for abortions by prohibiting indirect funding and tax-exemptions to businesses that provide abortions.

As it stands now, the government claims it doesn’t fund abortions with taxpayer money, yet billions of dollars go to Planned Parenthood for non-abortion services. Which then frees up ‘private’ money for abortions and advice on how to run an underage sex slave ring.

The legislation includes an exemption for the 3% or less of abortions performed after rape or to preserve the life of the mother. The bill explicitly states that federal funding will not be withheld from women that ‘need’ an abortion, just those that ‘want’ an abortion.

When the gut-wrenching story broke of the Philadelphia abortionist that routinely delivered live, viable babies before jamming scissors into their brains to kill them, I had to write about it.

The part of the story that struck me so deeply was the desperation that those women felt walking into that clinic. I don’t believe that anyone wants an abortion; but that women are pressured by family, friends, and society (mostly well-meaning, I’m sure) to believe that the procedure is no big deal.

How far below rock bottom does a woman have to be to walk into a filthy ‘clinic’ and have the kicking, squirming life sucked out of her? That woman needs love and support, not the legal right to an abortion. In the article I wrote, I mentioned some ways to actually help pregnant women, such as donating money to cover prenatal care for those that can’t afford it, bringing meals to single moms trying to make it, or volunteering with a pregnancy care center or adoption agency.

For that I got called a woman-hater.

It turns out that unless one believes that a mother-to-be has the right to end the life of her unborn child, that person hates women. I vehemently dispute that claim. I do like women. I like men, too for the record. I like all people no matter how big or small, no matter their age, and no matter where they live: In a mansion, on the street, or in a uterus.

I believe that God created humans (and other stuff … like everything), and even though you’re not going to get along with everyone, life is worthy of respect.
